Their children will always be grateful to both of them for their hard work and unselfish values. Mom’s dedication to her family was very evident in her never-ending support of her children and of our father with his lengthy battle with health problems. Their trips with Friendship Force all over the world were great examples. Vi and Hugh encouraged their children to work hard, step out to see the world and to set their goals high. Throughout all of their adventures together, their focus was always on their family. He spent the next 15 years as a handyman/manager of apartments. Because of his health, Hubert and Vi moved to Billings to retire but retirement wasn’t meant for dad. He enjoyed auction sales, and could always be counted on for good conversation over coffee. Hubert was a true gentleman and was well respected and loved by everyone whose life he touched. He served on various school, agriculture and bank boards. Hubert represented the people of Eastern Montana as a Representative and Senator until he was forced to retire due to CLL. Farming and ranching was dad’s passion, and there was always something that needed to be done. She was a very generous person and would donate many of her quilts to charities and other good causes, hundreds of which are now enjoyed by extended family, friends, and acquaintances across the country. She was up and going to the Crazy Days sales the next day as Mom couldn’t resist a bargain! Vi developed a quilt pattern called “Vi’s barbed wire” which was to become her trademark. Mom was a hard worker and didn’t let little things like getting run over by a tractor get her down. Mom worked alongside Dad on the farm as she learned how to drive tractors and other large equipment. They remained on the Abrams family farm and raised 4 children. It was here that Hubert and Vi met, fell in love and were married in November of 1947. Upon graduation from high school, she worked as a telephone operator for AT&T and then accepted a teaching position at the Slater school near Carlyle, MT. She grew up on a ranch south of Miles City, along the Tongue River, with her sister and 4 brothers. Vi was born Mathe daughter of Charles and Dora Hout of Miles City, MT. He grew up on the farm at Carlyle with his brother and sister, graduated from Ollie High School and later entered the United States Navy during World War II and served honorably. Hubert was born May 8, 1925, the son of Charles and Olive Abrams in Carlyle, MT. Hubert and Viola Abrams have been reunited in heaven. This will conveniently resize for every size and orientation. Creating a new AppIcon resource, and inserting the Sketch-created images resulted in the app icon still working. Do a search for "ios app icon generator" or something similar. You can do it yourself or there are also websites and scripts for getting the right sizes. You can start with a 1024x1024 pixel image and then downsize it to the correct sizes. So, for example, in the first blank above (29pt 2x) you would need a 58x58 pixel image. For 2x double the points and 3x triple the points. If the image is 1x then the pixels are the same as the points. Look at how many points (pt) each blank on the empty image set is. That flexibility allows these batteries to potentially power everything from smartphones and watches to the infrastructure underpinning the movement toward renewable energy. The bigger the battery, the more power it can deliver. It can charge and deliver energy several times faster, the researchers said.īecause of the liquid components, the battery can be scaled up or down easily, depending on the power needed. The room-temperature battery promises more power than today’s lithium-ion batteries, which are the backbone of most personal electronics. In the paper, the researchers note that it may be possible to create a battery with even lower melting points using different materials. The battery includes a sodium-potassium alloy as the anode and a gallium-based alloy as the cathode. Ding is the lead author of a paper on the room-temperature battery the team published recently in Advanced Materials. “This battery can provide all the benefits of both solid- and liquid-state - including more energy, increased stability and flexibility - without the respective drawbacks, while also saving energy,” said Yu Ding, a postdoctoral researcher in associate professor Guihua Yu’s research group in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering. This represents a major change, because current liquid-metal batteries must be kept at temperatures above 240 degrees Celsius. The metallic electrodes in the team’s battery can remain liquefied at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), the lowest operating temperature ever recorded for a liquid-metal battery, according to the researchers. Liquid-state batteries can deliver energy more efficiently, without the long-term decay of sold-state devices, but they either fall short on high energy demands or require significant resources to constantly heat the electrodes and keep them molten. Solid-state batteries feature significant capacity for energy storage, but they typically encounter numerous problems that cause them to degrade over time and become less efficient. The UT researchers have created what they call a “room-temperature all-liquid-metal battery,” which includes the best of both worlds of liquid- and solid-state batteries. Most batteries are composed of either solid-state electrodes, such as lithium-ion batteries for portable electronics, or liquid-state electrodes, including flow batteries for smart grids. AUSTIN, Texas - Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have built a new type of battery that combines the many benefits of existing options while eliminating their key shortcomings and saving energy. 9/18/2023 0 Comments Gord downie 1989It's also a great time to acknowledge how lucky we are to live in a time of a songwriter like Gord Downie and a welcome opportunity to celebrate the man and his genius. The lead singer of The Tragically Hip leaves his mild-mannered persona behind and turns into this shaking, twitching and grimacing apparition, possessed by the soul of the late Jim Morrison. If you're not so familiar with the Hip, this is also a perfect introduction to the band's songs. Rather, he shows us our common ground and makes us glance up above, the sky same but different to all of us depending on where we stand and how closely we choose to look. He's a hockey lover with a poet's heart, bitingly funny and unfailingly gentle in his observations an artist who never gets lost in his own mythology. '38 Years Old' (1989) Skimming through the lyrics to any Hip song, you will quickly realize that Gord Downie's lyrics read very much like the words from a Canadian textbook, whether it's true. Secret Path is a ten song album by Gord Downie with a graphic novel by Jeff Lemire that tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve year-old boy who died fifty years ago on October 22, 1966, in flight from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario, trying to walk over 400 miles home to the family he was taken from. There's a canon's worth of material from which to choose, and revisiting all of this incredible music, it's easy to understand why Downie is a songwriter who brings people together. While we look ahead to that, and all the conflicting emotions it will encompass, we're also taking a moment to reflect on our favourite Tragically Hip songs. With 14 Juno Awards and nine number 1 albums in Canada, the Tragically Hip has been a mainstay of this country's music scene for more than three decades it's a member of our musical family.Īlong with the terrible news of Downie's illness came the inspirational announcement of a final concert tour. Like so many music fans, we're reeling from the news that musician Gord Downie, the Tragically Hip's lead singer-songwriter, has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. 9/18/2023 0 Comments Hardest sudoku everIs it so for the latest one, or some of the earlier ones created by this same Finish mathematician, that there is only one order of filled in squares that will solve it ? 9/18/2023 0 Comments Congress term limits imemeSuch corruption, obviously, would increase the detachment and arrogance of the chief executive and, in turn, diminish his own sense of accountability to the law and the citizenry. Many Americans believed that unlimited tenure degenerated into a sense of inheritance and entitlement. The abuse of power, corruption and tyranny were no longer figments of imagination, but rather raw reality.īroad support for the22nd Amendment rested on an array of concerns. This significant constitutional change reflected a number of factors, including historical and political circumstances.Īt that juncture in history, the specter of Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini, and other fascist leaders, filled Americans, indeed, citizens across the globe, with deep fears about the likelihood of the aggrandizement of power by executives who held office for too many years. In early 1951, 41states had ratified the proposed amendment within four years, satisfying the constitutional requirement of approval by three-fourths of the states, and the22nd Amendment was thus firmly entrenched in the Constitution. In March of 1947, Congress easily passed a proposed amendment to limit presidential re-eligibility, an idea that was, in fact, introduced, but defeated, in the Constitutional Convention. Roosevelt’s death, just five months into his final term in office, prompted another in a flurry of proposed amendments to limit tenure in the nation’s highest office. In 1944, riding a campaign war theme which asserted that a nation ought not to change horses in mid-stream, he sought and won a fourth term. In1940, as war clouds loomed over Europe, FDR ran for and was elected to a third term. Roosevelt, broke the roughly 150 year-old tradition. The practice of these founding presidents helped to forge an unwritten tradition of a two-term limit on the office, one that Theodore Roosevelt called a “wise custom.” The Amendment essentially codified what had become a two-term tradition, initiated by George Washington, who refused to seek a third term because, as he stated, “an elective monarchy is not why we fought the revolution.” Thomas Jefferson, who favored a practice of rotation in office, as a virtue of republicanism, similarly rejected a third term, as did James Madison and James Monroe. The 22nd Amendment states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” or more than once if that person has occupied the office for more than two years of a term to which someone else was elected, but unable to complete because of death or disability. In any case, the debate about congressional term limits will be better informed by the experience of the 22ndAmendment. The same assertions and circumstances that convinced the American people to amend the Constitution in favor of term limits for the presidency, might persuade the citizenry to amend it for the purpose of limiting the number of terms that people may serve in the House and the Senate. This is especially true when the reasoning, motives and arguments advocating constitutional change in our time closely resemble the reasoning, motives and arguments advocating constitutional change in an earlier time. Although small pockets of voices advocating its repeal can be heard from time to time, polls show that Americans, with good reason, believe strongly in the merits of that fundamental change in the Constitution.Ĭonstitutional history can be a useful guide in a nation’s decision-making process. That Amendment, ratified in 1951, is now 70 years old. The debate surrounding proposals for term limits on members of Congress would benefit from a reminder of the reasoning behind the 22nd Amendment, which imposed a two-term limit on the presidency. |
